Examinations and vaccinations are important for pets to be healthy and prevent certain diseases. Certain vaccines are a must for pets and these are known as core vaccines.
The elective vaccines are not necessary and depend on the lifestyle of the dog or cat. For example, lifestyle varies depending on the amount of time the pet stays outdoors and also the areas travelled.
The core vaccines for dogs are : Canine Distemper, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus Type 2, and Parvovirus which include four respiratory viruses, and the Rabies vaccine.
The elective vaccines for dogs are Bordetella which is mandatory for all puppies and all dogs being boarded in a kennel. It is also recommended for all dogs that are exposed to other dogs such as a dogpark and grooming area. Leptospirosis is recommended for dogs that are often outdoors and near water or wildlife areas. The Lyme vaccine is also important for dogs that have a great exposure to ticks.
The core vaccines for cats are the Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Viral Rhinotrachitis, Feline Calicivirus and the Rabies vaccine.
The elective vaccines for cats is the Leukemia vaccine which is recommended for all outdoor cats.
Puppies
- 8 weeks: Canine Distemper, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus Type 2 and Parvovirus. Bordetella vaccine core for all puppies.
- 12 weeks: 1st Booster of Canine Distemper, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus Type 2 and Parvovirus. Leptospirosis if pet is at risk (elective).
-16 weeks: 2nd Booster of Canine Distemper, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus Type 2 and Parvovirus. Rabies and Booster of Leptospirosis.
Adults
-Yearly booster following the 16-week vaccinations
Kittens
- 8 weeks: Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Viral Rhinotrachitis, Feline Calicivirus.
- 12 weeks: 1st Booster Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Viral Rhinotrachitis, Feline Calicivirus. Leukemia vaccine if pet is at risk.
- 16 weeks: 2nd Booster Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Viral Rhinotrachitis, Feline Calicivirus. Rabies vaccine and Booster of Leukemia.
Adults
-Yearly Booster following the 16-week vaccinations
